TROY — When in doubt, Southfield A&T’s No. 8 will figure it out.

Isaiah Marshall churned the final yard across the goal line for a touchdown as time expired, giving the Southfield A&T Warriors a 40-35 win over West Bloomfield in the D1 semifinals, and a berth in the state finals at Ford Field for the first time ever.

Nigel Dunton got both his hands on a last-second attempt at a game-winning field goal by the Wolves, slapping it away to preserve a 21-20, come-from-behind victory, as the Lakers rallied from 20 points down to win their first regional title since the 2020 championship season. 

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — West Bloomfield, like most teams in the state, has battled the injury bug throughout the season.

On Friday, Clarkston showed just how much it had grown in the last month when it secured its fourth consecutive victory, defeating No. 8 West Bloomfield 44-36 in a game that the Wolves led by 23 points with just 3:45 to play.

Hall of Fame coach Chris Bell of Lake Orion leapt for joy as he watched his defense get a game-ending sack, securing the ninth-ranked Dragons 17-13 win over No. 3 West Bloomfield on Friday night at Lake Orion High School.

After dropping a wide-open potential touchdown in Week 1, Kamren Flowers more than made amends in Week 2, scoring on his first touch against Birmingham Groves on Thursday, and rushing for 115 yards and two of the five touchdowns of 30-plus yards the West Bloomfield Lakers put up in a 41-19 rout. 

After his team scored the potential game-tying touchdown with 15 seconds left, first-year West Bloomfield coach Zach Hilbers gave the ball to his wild card, Colorado commit Brandon Davis-Swain on an end-around, and watched as the 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end plowed his way into the end zone with the game-winning score in a 22-21 victory over Chippewa Valley. 

West Bloomfield scored a touchdown with 15 seconds left and ran in the 2-point conversion to claim a 22-21 win over Chippewa Valley in the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023.
