BLACKBURN MP Kate Hollern writes her fortnightly column for the Lancashire Telegraph. Last week the Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the Government’s spending plans for the next year in his Budget. On the surface, there is lots to welcome: a new Treasury office located in Darlington and a National Investment Bank in Leeds, the furlough and Universal Credit extensions, and a new Restart Scheme to help businesses re-open. When you scratch beneath the surface though, there is a lot lurking under this Conservative Budget – and a lot that has been ignored. The Government already announced in February the council tax hike that’ll be hitting pockets from April. The Communities Secretary stood at the lectern last May and told the nation that he would do whatever needed to support councils. He’s broken that promise the Conservative-run Local Government Association says councils still face a £2.6 billion blackhole in their finances. Councils have been reeling from austeri
