Friday marked a deadline to submit paperwork to run for some positions in the March primary election. Voters will decide on three Humboldt County Board of Supervisor positions and a contested Humboldt County Superior Court Judge seat. The deadlines for the second assembly district is set to close Wednesday evening.

The Humboldt County Planning Commission denied the permit in a contentious 4-3 vote against the 22,000-square-foot grow near Briceland, but the applicant successfully appealed the denial to the Board of Supervisors alongside county staff, who found the criminal allegations against the owner were completely unsupported by evidence and issues regarding well water use and nearby northern spotted owl populations had been mitigated.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Kyle Holt said that “we have a pretty good idea of where these threats are coming from,” but was reluctant to say more in order to preserve the investigation’s integrity. Beginning last Monday, the phone calls – on Nov. 28, 29 and Wednesday and Thursday of this week – ranged from invoking the presence of armed men near campus, bomb threats and reports of an imminent school shooting.

PREVIOUSLY: Pressured by Upcoming Ballot Measure, County Supervisors Look to Improve Existing Cannabis Regs

The board voted four to one, with 2nd District Supervisor Mike Wilson dissenting, to not put the idea to the voters on March 5, citing the lack of public appetite and opposition from the current holder of each office. Voters were asked this question in 2016 with Measure Q, which was defeated at the ballot box. 

However, the supervisors – who voted unanimously, with 1st District Supervisor Rex Bohn absent, to ask staff to draft the measure– wanted modifications, including requiring four fifths vote to change it and a definition of parcels. During discussions, not all of the board members agreed with all prongs of the proposed measure and the approval was hardly enthusiastic.

The board’s nearly unanimous vote – 1st District Supervisor Rex Bohn was absent – to delay the agreement with Crowley Wind Services resulted from the lack of input from tribal governments and fishing groups.
