When some books, including best sellers, were conspicuously absent from the science fiction Hugo Awards last year, writers and fans became suspicious.

The statement from the sci-fi and fantasy awards came after a lengthy investigation into the exclusion of R.F. Kuang's Babel and others at Chengdu Worldcon.

The "Yellowface" author draws on her own experiences in the publishing industry to tackle issues like cultural appropriation and representation.
