A rare sighting of an endangered Hessels' Hairstreak butterfly was confirmed at a property owned by the Nature Conservancy in the Delmarva Peninsula in southern Delaware. The species has been depleted due to habitat loss, since its sole food source is The Atlantic white cedar tree. The sighting in Delaware was the first in 27 years. The species remains common, but vulnerable, in the New Jersey Pine Barrens.
