For Mexico, Saturday’s matchup with South Boone County at the Gary Filbert Classic came down to a frustrating word: if.
“If our shots fell it would have been tight,” observed Jordyn Thurman. “But ours weren’t falling and theirs were.”
The rims were unkind to Mexico Saturday evening at the Gary Filbert Classic in the MHS Sports Complex. visitors’ 13 points in the first quarter.
But early on, Mya Miller and the Bulldogs ran evenly with South Boone. Miller opened the scoring with an underhand lay up and added 6 more before the first buzzer. Her final bucket was a coast to coast romp. Thurman sank one of two from the line and Alexis Willer made a strong move into the paint for two.

After battering Hannibal for three quarters on Thursday, the Bulldogs could rein in their offense. But the girls – particularly Elizabeth Joiner – would not let up on defense.
Joiner’s skirmish with the Pirates’ Gracie Martin and anyone else who dared to invade that precious sliver of space under the rim was more than a fourth quarter sideshow.
“I feel like everyone was watching,” Joiner said. “I was not going to let this post player get the ball.”
Mexico allowed a single basket in the final eight minutes to keelhaul the Pirates 51-15 in Hannibal.
Coaches often use the refrain “don’t quit.”
But those are just words. Thursday night’s edge of the seat 52-51 Bulldogs win at Battle is what that phrase looks like when it plays out for real.
Mexico went into the halftime break down 32-23 – and it could have been worse, but for a 5-0 rally pieced together by Mya Miller and Riley Thurman that closed out the period.
Throughout the third quarter, the Bulldogs gnawed into the Spartans advantage. However, they were still down by 6 as the clock wound down to the one minute mark. Their perimeter shots weren’t falling and they needed something big.

When Capri’Ona Fountain capped off a fast break to seal a 48-17 Mexico win at the Sports Center on Tuesday night, the points were hardly meaningless.
“Capri’Ona gave us good energy,” said head coach Ed Costley.
The Bulldogs tore through Brookfield in the first and third quarters, hammering the visiting Bulldogs 19-4 and 17-3, respectively. While the 1-2-2 defense held throughout, however, Mexico’s offense struggled in the second and fourth.

If it’s possible to be pleased and disappointed at the same time, that was the state of Mexico’s girls after Saturday night’s championship match of the Montgomery County Invitational.
“We definitely didn’t play our game,” said Abby Oetting after the Bulldogs fell 49-43, bringing home the second place trophy in the eight team, week-long event.
