Sarasota cyclists celebrated the grand opening of the Ringling Trail Thursday morning. It is one of the first protected bike lanes in the county. 

The $2.7 million project to convert Ringling Boulevard from Lime to Pineapple avenues into a "complete street" is now open, providing a protected bike lane from Legacy Trail to downtown.

With the first phase of work on the Ringling Trail from Lime to Pineapple avenues nearing completion, work is set to soon begin west of Washington Boulevard.

As negotiations with Seminole Gulf Railway have jumped the tracks, Sarasota looks to take the remaining 4.3 miles of Legacy Trail to the streets.

Reducing Ringling Boulevard to two lanes will allow for protected bicycle lanes and connect Legacy Trail from Payne Park to the downtown core.

At least one lane of traffic is expected to be open throughout the construction.
