Castilleja Schools controversial effort to rebuild its Bryant Street campus received a boost on Monday night when the City Council approved its plan to relocate a public utility easement that was created more than 30 years ago.

Castilleja School, which won the right to redevelop its Bryant Street campus in 2022 despite neighborhood opposition, will return to the public spotlight next week when the city considers its plan to relocate an easement.

On Thursday, Nanci Kauffman resigned as head of Castilleja School, concluding a 13-year term that was in many ways defined by the schools contentious plan to redevelop its Bryant Street campus.

Tensions between Castilleja School and its neighbors reignited on Monday night as the City Council picked apart the schools new plan for managing traffic from its forthcoming campus renovation.

In an abrupt change of tone, Castilleja argued in a letter this week that the citys move to reduce the size of the its proposed underground garage is illegal and runs afoul of the U.S. Constitution.
