Driver-less shuttles may be built in Christchurch - a $20 million boon to city

Technology companies are being lured to Christchurch and could pump millions of dollars into the local economy. A world-leading self-automated transport company is proposing shifting all its offshore manufacturing from China to Christchurch – a move forecast to bring $20 million to the local economy each year. HMI Technologies executive chairman Mohammed Hikmet said Covid-19 had made it difficult to manufacture the technical components of its intelligent transport systems offshore. It was now looking to shift its company and manufacturing to Christchurch. SUPPLIED/Stuff HMI Technologies is looking to move offshore manufacturing of their Ohmio self-automated vehicles shown here at Christchurch Airport to Christchurch, injecting over $20 million into the economy.

Visitors could pop on a virtual reality headset, “click” on one of the Wharenui’s ornate panels and watch and listen to a telepresence explanation of the panel from Te Rūnaka O Awarua educator Bubba Thompson or kaiwhakahaere of the rūnanga Dean Whaanga. Ātea project lead Dr Hēmi Whaanga (Ngāti Kahungunu) idea for a virtual marae came about when Te Rūnanga o Te Whānau chief executive Rikirangi Gage mused how great it would be if he could still share knowledge with his grandchildren in the distant future, during a Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge workshop.
