After weeks of discussions about creating and managing indoor pickleball courts in the Oktibbeha County Community Safe Room, the county decided it doesn’t want to partner with the city after all.

Tensions ran high at today's Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors meeting.This comes after OCH Regional Medical Center announced on social media it would be partnering with a new emergency medical service provider, Global Medical Response.

Stephen Pannell has worked for OCH Regional Medical Center as a paramedic for more than 15 years. But Pannell and his coworkers were called into a meeting at the hospital on May 25, where they were abruptly told the hospital’s EMS/Ambulance service would be moving to a private company.

If Starkville wants to have pickleball in the county’s safe room, the city will have to pay for it.

The county coordinator for the Oktibbeha County Extension Service spent eight years working in the 73-year-old former Felix Long Memorial Hospital building downtown before county leaders moved her office last May, along with Human Services and several others, to a more adequate home on Lynn Lane — one that thankfully has heating and air conditioning.

The two contested races for state or district-level offices have shown very little in the way of financing since January.

It calls for building a facility that would seat between 6,000 and 8,000 concertgoers near the riverfront in the heart of downtown.
