As homelessness remains a persistent issue facing Kansas, advocates slammed a bill to ban sleeping and camping on state and local land.

Advocates of the proposed law say it will help manage widespread homelessness. Critics argue it will push those in need further from resources.

The Wyandotte High School students learned from advocates for the homeless before spending the night in tents and makeshift shelters. The students did most of the planning for the event, their teacher said.

The KCK Police Department and community organizers are working to protect those at risk during this week's winter weather.
