A farmer in the Bongani Bongo corruption trial told the court how shocked he was to learn that the state bought his farm for R22,5m more than the price he had asked for.

Petrus Johannes Van Tonder said the farm was then sold in 2010 after funds were made available.

This is after the state presented evidence of R4,5 million that was paid out as a commission fee.

The farm owner whose farm was sold allegedly at an inflated price tag of R26m to the state has told the court he only charged R10.5m for his property.

He said the document was addressed to the then head of the department, and the writing of it was never discussed with him. 


The Mpumalanga department of human settlements wanted to buy a farm in Emalahleni in 2010 but "did not have the funds", only to buy it for R37.5m the following year.

He said the price was more than what the department was bargaining for.
