A biographical exhibition reveals the profound origins of her intensely engaging art

Robert Doubek, a former Air Force intelligence officer and author of the book "The Vietnam Veterans Memorial: The Inside Story,” joins the show to talk about the creation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in D.C. and what it means to veterans.

"It is very moving to see that this memorial has a tremendous longevity,” said Robert Doubek, co-founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

Robert Doubek’s role in the contentious three-year quest to construct a memorial honoring Vietnam War veterans near the National Mall began in 1979 with a voice in the back of a room.

There are more than 58,000 U.S. service members whose legacies are sketched into the Vietnam War memorial, which was unveiled 40 years ago this Veterans Day.

The Vietnam War memorial helped change how veterans were perceived, ushering in an era of healing, remembrance and homage.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become the most visited memorial in Washington and maintains its iconic grip on the national conscience despite initial reservations among planners about the understated design.
