The suit was filed nearly 3 months after the council voted against the All Peoples Church Light Project, which would have been built on a six-acre site on College Avenue, just north of Interstate 8.

All Peoples Church filed a lawsuit Monday against the city of San Diego that alleges the city council's rejection of its large-scale church project in Del Cerro violates federal protections for religious institutions.

The mega-church project was denied 6-2 by the San Diego City Council after a four-hour long meeting.

The San Diego City Council voted 6-2 to deny a plan that would pave the way for All Peoples Church to build a large-scale church in Del Cerro on a portion of land just north of I-8 and College Avenue.

The plans called for a 900-seat church, parking structure and gymnasium on six acres.

The All Peoples Church project, which proposes to build a 900-seat sanctuary and two-story parking garage on a 6-acre plot of land zoned for housing near Interstate 8 and College Avenue in Del Cerro, has cleared an important hurdle.

The San Diego Planning Commission is recommending approval of a new church project in Del Cerro after listening to more than two hours of comments from supporters and opponents.
