A backlash against internet data centers has triggered a wave of laws around the country to restrain the rapidly growing industry that uses massive amounts of energy to make cloud computing and smart technology possible.

Localities are starting to increase taxes and regulations on data centers as the football-field-sized buildings come under greater scrutiny.

Chair Deshundra Jefferson, a newly elected Democrat who campaigned on raising taxes on data centers, appeared to speak directly to members of her party who may be skittish to impose on the industry an elevated tax rate in a one fell swoop.

She said she will soon be beginning a "new challenge," but didn't go into detail.

The defendants will appear before the Westminster Magistrates' Court on 3 April 2024
