The city of Tallahassee is projecting a multi-million-dollar shortfall in funding next year. The amount of tax dollars coming in and the expenses coming out aren't currently balanced.

These bills could eventually cause anywhere from a round of budgetary belt-tightening to an existential funding crisis in Tallahassee and other cities.

Tallahassee city commissioners, in a split vote, tentatively agreed to a proposed property tax increase to balance their 2024 budget.

City Commissioner Jack Porter said the city should consider raising its tax rate in the coming years to account for the need for more services and increased costs.

The expenses, comprised of property taxes, fire protection fees, utilities, solid waste service, and business taxes (which the City of Tallahassee has repealed but others still levy), are compared to 11 peer cities in Florida.

The Council on Culture & Arts will get an additional $300,000 but Tallahassee might have opened the floodgates for other groups seeking money.
