A huge financial burden has been lifted for a group of Saskatchewan residents who have significant hearing loss. The provincial government will now share in the cost of replacing cochlear hearing devices, an expense beyond the reach of many.

In some provinces, people with cochlear implants are on the hook for thousands of dollars to upgrade their sound processors every few years to continue hearing, leading to calls for governments to cover the cost.

Saskatchewan's Opposition NDP is asking why the province covers cochlear implant upgrades differently from replacements for health devices such as pacemakers and prosthetics.
