The Wasatch Front Regional Council voted to approve a massive long-term transportation plan Thursday that includes the proposed gondola.

A contentious public meeting on Thursday included comments from the Snowbird GM, Ski Utah President, the Alta mayor and Patagonia.

Members of the Wasatch Front Regional Council approved 27-year regional transportation plan including a gondola for Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The Utah Department of Transportation says the gondola on Little Cottonwood Canyon could help people get off the canyon when the road is closed but ski resorts are open, but it would not run during any active artillery avalanche mitigation.

The Wasatch Front Regional Council released its transportation plan for public comment. The plan incudes the controversial Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola that would take skiers to Alta and Snowbird ski resorts. Salt Lake Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson spoke against it.
