Rope Replacement Project News Today

The James River Bridge (JRB) reopened to vehicular traffic on Monday afternoon, after it was shut down for several days to allow for critical maintenance work.

The closures, the 1st lasting Friday at 1 a.m. until Tuesday at 5 a.m., are to replace the bridge's aging counterweight wire ropes used to lift the bridge.

During these full closures, all traffic will be redirected to the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, offering a primary alternate route.

VDOT said the closures, scheduled over the course of several days next January and February, must be done to replace the bridge's aging counterweight wire ropes.

Attention drivers who commute across the James River Bridge (JRB): expect lane closures throughout November as work begins on the Wire Ropes and Replacement Project.
