Rourke Bridge News Today

LOWELL — Repair work on the aging Rourke Bridge, previously expected to wrap up by March, has been extended until May and perhaps into the summer, according to a spokesperson with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

MassDOT's inspections of the Rourke Bridge are not publicly available, and it's not even clear when the last state inspection was completed. Bridge safety in the commonwealth came under scrutiny following the catastrophic collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Tuesday morning.

LOWELL — A Chelmsford resident was driving from his home to Pawtucketville in early March, when he said he felt the Rourke Bridge sway for more than 50 feet along his route. He called the “rocking” motion a “new and disturbing change.”
