Moose keep stopping cars in the middle of the highway to lick salt off them, with motorists being urged not to stop for the huge animals.

Parks Canada is warning drivers not to stop while on highways to let moose lick their cars this winter, as more moose venture down to highways to fuel their salt intake.

Road salt on ice in freezing conditions, in theory, is meant to keep people safe. However, it can also have ugly side effects that hamper the environment.

Moose populations are declining in many provinces, with the exception of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton. Wildlife researchers and First Nations say logging, sport hunting and climate change are to blame.
