The past six years have witnessed protests by leaders of the Opposition parties against the "harm" the move caused to the country's economy and its people.

The RBI on Friday announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and existing notes in circulation can either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by Sept 30.

In the fiscal years 2019–20, 2020–21, or 2021–2022, no new Rs. 2,000 (two thousand rupee notes) notes were printed.
