Positive spring weather in New York leaves apple growers optimistic

Last year’s domestic apple crop is a tale of two seasons as weather conditions in major growing regions dictated significantly different results for orchards in the Northwest and Northeast. The extreme heat in late summer and overall challenging weather conditions in Washington caused a significant 20 percent drop in volume to a 100 million case crop. This shortfall created supply challenges for retailers who typically rely heavily on fruit from the country’s largest apple growing region.

Boom Northeast apple crop and imports bring strong volumes through summer

The festive lights have lost their twinkle and the eggnog is expired, mid-winter is here, and with it an invitation to slow down and hibernate — that is, unless you’re in the business of apples. Yes, winter apples are here, and whether it’s a bumper crop or if a growing region is down a bit, apples are on the move.

Initial spring projections from New York apple growers called for a solid season of regional varieties with volumes expected to return to the previous three-year average. As picking of early varieties began in mid-September, the crop has shown even stronger results than anticipated.

One of the biggest players in the Eastern apple deal, D’Arrigo New York brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to benefit growers and customers. “We’re the largest apple house in the Northeast and have been moving Eastern apples for over 40 years,” said Gabriela D’Arrigo, vice president of marketing and communications for D’Arrigo New York in Bronx, NY. “We do a lot of business covering the Eastern apple deal.”

Experience shows that Mother Nature always has the final say even against the bast laid out agriculture business plans. Last fall’s apple season was directly impacted by devasting weather incidents regionally and in the Pacific Northwest. This was coupled by economic challenges with supply chain issues, scarcities in packing material, daunting labor shortages in every aspect of operations, and a transportation market that defied any normalcy with either pricing or availability.
