Finalists have been named in the Microbial Ecology Collaborative Startup Launchpad (MECSL), a competition focused on innovative Wyoming-based startups in the fields of microbial ecology, environmental sustainability, natural resource management or data science.
Pitch Day for MECSL will be Wednesday, May 19, where finalists will compete for a $25,000 award pool.
MECSL is administered by IMPACT 307, the University of Wyoming’s business incubator network, and funded by Wyoming’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). The launchpad has brought in a series of teams that have been working to create functioning businesses in areas concerning the relationships between microorganisms as well as their environments.

Six teams were awarded seed funding recently for their startup companies at the sixth annual University of Wyoming Fisher Innovation Launchpad (FIL) competition, which was held virtually.
The FIL, a startup challenge for UW students, is funded through the contributions of Donne and Sue Fisher, and their desire to make a lasting and impactful legacy through supporting student-led startup companies.
“The Fisher Innovation Launchpad is a great platform that UW has for helping to commercialize the innovative technologies that we develop on campus,” says IMPACT 307 Director Dave Bohling. “One of our very first winners, Resono, is actually heading to NASA later this month to do wind tunnel testing on the space launch system program and has grown to five employees since it was founded.”

Nine student-led teams are vying for seed prize money to get their business plans off the ground in the John P. Ellbogen $50K Entrepreneurship Competition sponsored by the University of Wyoming’s College of Business.
The competition encourages students to act on their talents, ideas and energy to produce tomorrow’s leading businesses. It will be held Friday and Saturday, April 23-24, as a public webinar.
“The dedication and work ethic shown by our nine finalist teams have been outstanding,” says Patrick Kreiser, the UW College of Business Rile Chair of Entrepreneurship and Leadership. “More than anything, the purpose of experiential learning is to convince students to dream big and then provide them with the support to turn those dreams into reality. We are confident that all nine teams offer compelling value propositions and sustainable business models to help support the Wyoming economy.”
