The number of families asking for assistance is growing after the historic flash flooding in Graves County last week.

Kentucky officials are opening up applications for almost $124 million in federal funding to help rebuild housing and infrastructure primarily in tornado-impacted Western Kentucky, which Gov. Andy Beshear said could help rebuild around 600 homes. 

A Mayfield group focused on the community’s recovery from the deadly and historic tornado outbreak that impacted the region last year hit a big milestone Monday, giving its first newly renovated home to an unhoused survivor.

MAYFIELD — Doug Irby, owner of a mold removal and home foundation repair company, sees daily reminders that Kentuckians still need help to recover from the tornadoes of December 2021.

After the tornado outbreak, more than $52 million in donations poured into the Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund from all over the country. The money has been disbursed in several ways, including paying for funeral expenses, new housing and $1,000 checks to survivors. But some survivors are still trying to figure out where the rest of the money has gone.

Waiting for housing almost a year after tornado laid waste to Mayfield

Kentucky is spending hundreds of millions to recover from the deadly December 2021 tornado in the states west and Julys flash flooding in the east.

The Mayfield-Graves County Long-Term Recovery Group is hoping to help fill the rental housing need created in the community in the wake of last December’s tornado outbreak.
