Troopers believe the pickup driver, who was killed, was looking at a piece of paper and did not stop at a stop sign. Two dozen people on the bus, mostly high school athletes, went to the hospital.

The Sept. 14 school bus crash involving the Hatton-Northwood volleyball team, as well as its recovery and community support for it, has been named the 2023 Herald story of the year.

“It’s (an) open investigation and so there isn’t really a lot we can put out at this point,” Panasuk said.

Troopers are still working to figure out how many people were on the bus. Numerous students were taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks for injuries sustained in the crash.

NORTHWOOD — The school bus involved in a fatal crash Thursday afternoon near Petersburg had 25 students on board, Northwood Superintendent Shane Azure said Friday morning.
