contribution they made serving alongside u.s. forces. is there a sense that perhaps, you know, the u.s. owes them given their sacrifice? >> yes. so, technically, the population that we're serving right now are not refugees. they're -- they have special immigrant visa. they're called special immigrant visa entrants or sivs. and those are the folks that typically served as translators for the u.s. military in their home countries, back in afghanistan. and as a result, they are persecuted in their home countries. they're in grave danger. their families are in great danger. and so, it is our responsibility to resettle them. and so, we're -- we're starting to -- to see that happen. >> and -- and it was interesting. correct me if i'm wrong. i believe you have a staff member who's actually been through the process. and -- and is now working to help those who are coming, right? what -- what -- what's been his role? >> um, yeah. we actually have about a third

have done anything else, given that the us said, "look, we are going, "we're not going to support you?" britain didn't really have any other choice, did it? well, we couldn't stay there without the american support and i don't know enough about what internal conversations there have been, but certainly my view has been we should have been — and maybe we were, so i am not criticising anyone — but we should have been arguing very strongly that this was the wrong thing to do. whether you like it or not, it is part of your legacy. what would you say to the soldiers we have heard from this week that have been horrifically injured in afghanistan and the widows of soldiers who have died and they are saying, "well, "there was no point to this, was there?" they went to fight a war that was completely pointless and it is going back to the way it was. 0ur troops were fantastic in afghanistan and a lot of them made the ultimate sacrifice, a lot of them were injured and it is really important that they know this wasn't a hopeless endeavour and it wasn't a bad cause,

realistically could britain have done anything else, given that the us said, "we are going? it was a good cause. and we went there because we had a state of afghanistan turned into a state that was run by an extremist, islamist group that were harbouring people who were carrying out attacks like the 9/11 attack and were providing support for terrorist groups around the world. we went in there for very good reasons and we achieved a lot, thanks to those british and american and other armed forces over the last 20 years. what i would say to them is your sacrifice was not in vain. those 20 years, by the way, matter. you know, what we achieved in afghanistan matters today. i actually spoke yesterday to an afghan general, who himself was fighting the taliban just literally days ago and he said, "you know, do not forget, we made huge progress "during those 20 years. "my generation has grown up knowing something different from the taliban "and we are determined at some stage and in some way to get our "country back." so i think it is really

to those british and american and other armed forces over the last 20 years. what i'd say to them is the sacrifice was not in vain. those 20 years, by the way, matter. it's notjust former prime ministers that have had a pop at the us president. his own predecessor, donald trump, who signed the original withdrawal deal with the taliban, levelled this attack at him to a rally of supporters. biden's botched exit in afghanistan is the most astonishing display of gross incompetence by a nation's leader, perhaps at any time that anybody's ever seen. but while downing street here say the current prime minister is not criticising the us, pressure continues to build on biden to extend his withdrawal deadline — as fears grow that not everyone will get out from the airport in time. ione wells, bbc news. and ione is with me now.
