I’ve seen many productions of Sive over the years. I thought it had yielded up all its secrets but director Andrew Flynn has put John B Keane’s play through a Martin McDonagh lens, pumping up all the conflict and making it feel fresh. This violent interpretation is not a stretch — Keane’s writing simmers with threat, and the ending is brutal, but Flynn, who has sharpened his teeth on several McDonagh plays, brings that savagery to the fore.
