A Red Lake man has been sentenced to 144 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for a 2020 murder that took place in the Red Lake Nation. According to court documents, on Sept. 12, 2020, Ralph Edward Cloud, Jr., 38, killed his cousin, Allen Smith, in Smith’s home.

Charges state the man beat the victim with a metal cabinet and its drawers.

According to court documents, on June 8, 2020, Edward Duane Fairbanks, 30, was caring for a minor child. During the early afternoon hours, Fairbanks intentionally shoved the child into a table, causing a serious head injury. The child was taken to the hospital where doctors diagnosed a large skull fracture and a subdural hematoma. The child had to undergo a craniectomy to relieve pressure on the brain.

Prior to opening the new jail, $600,000 a year was budgeted for boarding inmates out of the county. But in 2021, with the new jail open, that expense went away and Becker County actually made $530,000 from the boarding of federal prisoners, along with boarding for other counties — which adds up to a $1.1 million budget turnaround.
