A federal judge denied a request made by Steve King’s attorneys to reduce total damages a jury ordered the former U.S. congressman’s campaign to pay for using a copyrighted photo

Steve Kings attorneys have asked a U.S. district judge to lower the damage amount to $200, allowable by law because the jury found the infringement was committed unknowingly.

The jury awarded the minimum damages to Laney Griner, who sued the then-congressman over a 2020 fundraising Facebook post using her sons image.

Steve King had never heard of the Success Kid meme. But when his office and campaign received a cease and desist letter, he said, he considered it a political trap.
