In good times and bad, New Orleans musicians have been schooled in a unique culture, one severely hit by the pandemic, when the Big Easy's streets were unnaturally quiet and empty, and players moved online. But the music, and the joy, persists.

In 1961, Sandra and Allan Jaffe stopped in New Orleans on their way home to Philadelphia from an extended honeymoon in Mexico. They heard music playing all around them in the French Quarter and stepped into an art gallery on St. Peter Street where a combo was playing traditional jazz.

Also, People for the American Way named the mayor of Ithaca, N.Y., as its executive director, and the Pew Charitable Trusts has chosen its next vice president for partnerships.
