Traders in Nashik, India have decided to indefinitely close onion auctions to protest against the governments imposition of a 40% duty on onion exports. The step by the central government would down the cost at which growers can export onions. The association representing onion traders in the district has said the government decision will adversely impact onion farmers and its export.

Onion auctions have shut indefinitely in all agriculture produce market committees (APMCs) in Maharashtras Nashik district to protest against Indias decision to impose a 40% duty on the staples exports. Traders said the governments decision would harm onion growers in the state, and urged the government to provide onions through the public distribution system.

Traders claimed the central govt's decision till December 31, 2023 will adversely affect the onion growers and its export

The All India Kisan Sabha, one of the leading farmers bodies, has appealed to all APMCs across Maharashtra to halt the trading of onions.

Most APMCs in the district, including Lasalgaon, India's largest wholesale onion market, remained closed on Monday in response to this decision
