COVID-19 appears poised to remain with us on a long-term basis, and many employers are asking what is currently mandated in respect to COVID-19 and the workplace? Many states have relaxed or eliminated workplace-related COVID rules, but some still have rules.

Major California labor updates include pay transparency law, expanding family leave, Contraceptive Equity Act, Covid Supplemental Paid Sick Leave, FAST Recovery Act, emergency condition protections, employee protections for mass layoffs, and mandated bereavement leave.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed over 30 bills affecting employers and employment practices and procedures in California. They take effect January 1, 2023, unless otherwise indicated. These changes include pay transparency, workplace safety, and disability insurance benefits.

Governor Newsom signed AB 152 extending availability of paid covid sick leave for California employees. Covid supplemental paid sick leave law provided a covered employer did not have to provide leave if an employee refused to provide documentation of a test result.
