Doctors at some of the largest US teaching hospitals are blowing the whistle on a lucrative practice they say endangers patients: Surgeons scheduling two or even three operations at virtually the same time, leaving during critical portions, then billing Medicare for work they didn’t do.

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System is pushing back against False Claims Act allegations, arguing that alleged overlapping surgeries are allowed in some circumstances under Medicare.

For a hospital that basically said "Trust us" on beginning the move from a public, governmental entity to a private, nonprofit organization in 2022, a federal whistleblower lawsuit alleging illegal billing practices and allowing doctors-in-training to operate on patients without physician supervision is not a good look for Erlanger Health System.
