The embattled power utility enters the 2023 winter season on its knees to the extent that it predicts possible stage 8 load-shedding

‘It will be a difficult winter’ was the resounding confirmation during Eskom’s state of the system briefing on Wednesday morning. 

The largest union at the power utility is losing confidence in the electricity ministers ability to end rolling blackouts.

Eskom has painted a difficult and grim winter for South Africans with stage 8 load shedding likely on the cards.

Stage 8 load shedding will mean that Eskom will cut electricity supply for 16 hours in a period of 32 hours, up from 12 hours during Stage 6 load shedding in a bid to protect the national grid from collapse.

South Africa has a “high risk” of increased rotational blackouts during the coming winter.

A former senior Eskom executive has added his voice to the concerns over a total blackout, saying the chances are highly unlikely.

Eskom has not yet gone beyond Stage 6, but many households and businesses are already facing electricity outages of more than 10 hours a day
