The constant need for carbon-rich fuels to power the economy increases atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Even if efforts are being made to cut CO2 emissions, this will not be enough to reverse the harmful impacts of the gas that is already in the atmosphere.

Researchers from Tokyo Tech have developed a tin-based metalโorganic framework (MOF) that can photocatalytically reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) into formate under visible light. The tin-based MOF exhibited a high apparent quantum yield of 9.8% and carried out extremely selective photoreduction without needing an additional photosensitizer. This could prove extremely useful, as currently, most metal complexes for reducing CO2 to useful chemicals utilize expensive, rare and precious metals.

The production of nickel and cobalt from laterite ore has received increasing attention as the demands for these metals continue to increase. The use of conventional fossil fuel resources as energy source in the energy intensive laterite ore processing processes results in release of CO2 and aggravates the greenhouse effect. Hydrogen is expected to become a clean secondary energy resource in the future along with the development of renewable energy technologies. Therefore, this Master of Researc...

The production of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has gained increasing attention as their demands continue to rise. This study evaluated the effects of temperature (700โ1000 ยฐC), CO content (10โ70 vol%), and reduction time (10โ90 min) on the selective reduction of a limonitic laterite ore and examined the mechanism of the selective reduction. SEM/EDS observation shows that the ore consists of goethite, hematite and small particles of clinochlore cemented by amorphous iron-rich silic...

Abstract Surface vacancies, serving as the activation centers for surface-adsorbed species, have been widely applied in catalysts to improve their activity and selectivity. In the case of ternary compound semiconductors, there is some controversy about exposed atoms and surface defects. Two-dimensional layered BiOCl is an important photocatalyst, which has had numerous studies focused on its oxygen vacancy (O ) and bismuth vacancy (Bi ). It has been realized that its (001) surface can consist o...
