Starting this school year, Lansing School District is dropping school bus routes for high schoolers who now can receive CATA passes for school rides.

Lansing Public Schools celebrated the graduation of the district's Latino students this week in its first in-person ceremony since the coronavirus pandemic began. The celebration honors a milestone that didn’t always come easy for the area’s Latino youth.

About 90 children and young adults have enrolled in the Lansing School District after fleeing Afghanistan following last summer’s Taliban takeover.

"When you really want to say something, you have to think first and you have to be like: If I say this, will it be correct? Will people be nice to me?" Non-native English speakers share their experiences.

Thats what Ariel Rodriguez-Penas mother, Miriam Pena-Osorio, used to tell him growing up  in Cuba. Now, hes hoping the world hears that advice. Rodriguez-Pena is raising $100,000 for his mother, who lives in Cuba, to have a brain tumor removed at University of Michigan hospital.
