•DCN still among Iowa's top three large weekly newspapers The sound of hammers briefly echoed through the Dickinson County News offices this week, as staff added a number of award plaques to their walls. The newspaper raked in 21 honors — placing first in eight competition categories — during last week's Iowa Better Newspaper Contest in Des Moines.

Following a week-and-a-half of deep freeze conditions, temperatures began to rise just in time for Winter Games weekend in Okoboji. With a wide variety of activities, including food, music, fun and of course … games available to the high volume of visitors who return each year. Recently, second-grade students at Okoboji Elementary had a chance to read "Santa's Stuck," a children's book by Rhonda Gowler Greene and Henry Cole. Their teachers, Jennifer Bouse, Brenda Martin, Jenni Cunningham and Beth McCabe, then asked the second-grade students how they would dislodge jolly old Saint Nicholas from if he were trapped in their chimney. Candidates in the race for Spirit Lake School Board were invited to two separate forums last week — neither was able to boast a full bench of board candidates, but both drew dozens upon dozens of community members interested in hearing from those in the race.
