City officials also are eyeing some buildings to house migrants.

While the family settled a lawsuit, they want more action taken to prevent another death in police custody.

Shane Sutherland will be ineligible for parole for ten years while he serves life in prison for the murder of Amanda Black in 2021.

Shane Sutherland, 29, admitted to the second-degree murder of his partner Amanda Black in 2021, according to an agreed statement of facts read out in court.

Shane Sutherland must serve a mandatory 10 years of incarceration before parole eligibility, which can only be granted at the discretion of the Parole Board of Canada.

“His crime was horrifically brutal, tragic, and senseless,” said Justice Lisa Warren in her decision in Fort St. John Supreme Court. 

Case facts, victim impact statements and mitigating factors surrounding the death of Amanda Black were heard in Fort St. John Supreme Court Wednesday during Shane Sutherland’s first day of sentencing.
