Honolulu police and other first responders are preparing for the possibility of Hawaiian Electric cutting power on Oahu as a last resort to reduce wildfire risks.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi “could not be anymore dissatisfied” with what he called the Honolulu Police Department’s “failing” communication efforts, saying officers don’t get to make up their own rules about what the public needs to know.

In the aftermath of the New Year’s Day-long manhunt and firefights that left a felon dead and two officers hospitalized, Honolulu police are establishing a 24/7 system for notifying the public of active threats.

Talks between the city and Hawaii media outlets have not resulted in an agreement to reopen public access to emergency services radio traffic. Officials say the channels will remain closed for at least 90 days.

Instead, the Honolulu Police Department has launched a new public site that lists most active police cases and is automatically updated every 15 minutes.
