WEYERS CAVE (WINA) – State Police say some trouble with the plane led to Monday evening’s crash of a small aircraft at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport. A preliminary investigation by Trooper J.M. Cappo reveals the 17-year old pilot was practicing touch-and-go landings at the airport around 7 Monday night when controls became unresponsive. He was unable to keep the Piper PA-28-140 from drifting left… and the plane caught a limb at the woodline of the airport, and hit several more trees.
The pilot from Romney, West Virginia was transported to UVa with serious, but non-life threatening injuries…. and a juvenile passenger was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for treatment also of non-life threatening injuries.
