This year’s flu and COVID-19 vaccine programmes will start earlier than planned as a precautionary measure, following the identification of a new COVID-19 variant, according to an announcement by the UK Government’s Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The decision means those most at risk from winter illness – including people in care homes for older people, the clinically vulnerable, those aged 65 and over, health and social care staff and carers – will be offered a vaccine in England from September.
According to the United Nations, the Middle East is experiencing the fastest pace of ageing globally, with the number of people aged 60 and over expected to triple by 2050.
