This normally means the bestselling authors of history books, leading professors, documentarians, but when we were planning this Years Program we decided to mix it up by inviting a novelist, and only the second one weve hosted in the conferences for the entire time weve been doing these. Don miller, author of masters of the air, and ddays in the pacific is also one of our longest standing advisers and counselors. Shes a perennial conference presence. He is also like we heard from rick at kinson this morning hes also looking into another time period in our important period in our history, and will be soon coming out this october with vicksburg, grants campaign that broke the confederacy. I said, well, you got the faulkner part right. The best way i can describe this book is equal parts. Literary history, social commentary and literary criticism. My job tonight [ applause ] is to introduce the two people on the podium who will be conducting this conversation. Jane henderson is the editor at the st. Louis post dispatch. She graduated from st. Louis and graduated from columbia with degrees in journalism and english literature. She cut short her work as a grad student to go to work as a copy editor in the mid 1980s and later, after three years in the newsroom of the hartford in connecticut, she returned to st. Louis and has been an editor and writer with the post dispatch features department for 30 years. As a book editor, she assigns and edits book reviews choosing from some 300 or so new books each week. Shes written stories about book trends and interviewed many authors from sam and rushdie to e. L. Doctorel. So tonight she adds to that and she will be having a conversation with caroline fraser. Look up to a lot. Hes a South Carolina senator. Im a North Carolina boy. And senator scott is somebody who in his initial primary, he defeated Strom Thurmonds son in that primary. We realized taking out in a primary the son of a longtime leader is something thats quite remarkable. I dont care if youre white, black or purple. But senator scott is a black man and only the fourth black man to serve as a u. S. Senator since reconstruction along with the great edward brook, barack obama, and my Law School Buddy cory booker. Theyve worked together in a number of efforts. Part of the area where senator scott has really reached across the aisle is the area were talking about today, criminal Justice Reform. And the senator opened some ears and minds in conservative circles where he talking about his experiences with the police, being stopped disproportionately, even in the Capitol Building where he serves as a senator.
