On the eve of a strike deadline at auto plants across the US and Canada, the <em>WSWS Autoworker Newsletter</em> spoke to Luis, a General Motors assembly worker at the Silao Complex in central Mexico.

Instead of organizing a joint struggle of workers across North America to prevent the ramping up production abroad to undermine a strike, the union bureaucracies seek to divide workers.

While the United Auto Workers union hammers out a new deal with GM and battery manufacturer Ultium Cells, workers are pointing to safety hazards as a key issue in the negotiations.

Three years ago, about twenty workers were fired at General Motors in Silao, Mexico, for organizing to drive out a gangster-ridden union and for supporting the U.S. national strike at GM. The AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center then intervened with bribes to break apart their rank-and-file group and impose a so-called “independent union” that betrayed and abandoned them.
