Gold and Silver commodity mutual funds have outperformed equity funds in the latest month. Notable performers include Invesco India Gold ETF FoF and Aditya Birla SL Gold Fund. Silver funds led by UTI Silver ETF FoF showed significant returns.

Experts say the silver prices outlook is bullish in the long term but for mutual fund investors, taking precious metal exposure via gold may be a better bet.

Investors can put in a minimum amount of Rs 100 in gold and silver exchange-traded funds by Tata Mutual Fund. However, keep in mind that silver is more a tactical allocation as opposed to gold, which is more a strategic allocation for portfolio diversification.

The schemes are benchmarked against Gold-London Bullion Market association (LBMA), Gold-India, Gold-London AM, and FTSE Gold Mines. Gold-London AM gave around 9.60% in one month.

In the three month horizon, the schemes lost around 2.57%. Aditya Birla Sun Life Silver ETF lost the most of around 4.01%. In nine months, the schemes have offered double-digit returns of around 12.65% and 20.60% in one year horizon.

There are factors in favour of silver, but gold may do better in the medium-term given its inflation hedge status
