Drama broke out in the East London high court when convicted wife killer Simphiwe Mxosa reportedly tried to hang himself shortly before being sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday.

The state has asked the high court judge sitting for the trial of convicted wife killer Simphiwe Mxosa to sentence the former correctional service employee to no less than life imprisonment. Prosecutor Andile Nohiya made his closing argument in the East London court on Friday, pointing out that Mxosa, a law enforcement officer, instead of protecting his wife, Bulelwa, had killed her.

Convicted wife killer and former correctional services prison warden Simphiwe Mxosa was not in his “full mind” when he hacked his wife death in front of a young child inside his room at the West Bank Prison barracks in March 2022.

The presentence proceedings in the case of convicted wife murderer Simphiwe Mxosa has been delayed for over a month after the defence attorney requested time to source a presentence report. A nine-year-old girl told the East London high court on Friday she witnessed a former prison warder attack his estranged wife with a bush knife in his room in the staff accommodation block at the city’s Westbank Correctional Facility.
