The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has provisionally withdrawn charges against five of the six men accused of killing eight people and seriously injuring three others at a house in Kwazakhele, Gqeberha, in January 2023.

Five men arrested in connection with a mass shooting at a birthday party in Kwazakhele earlier in 2023 will remain in custody for at least another six months while the state continues its investigations into the matter.

The five men accused of turning a Kwazakhele birthday bash into a scene of chaos and bloodshed when they allegedly shot eight people and wounded three others, have abandoned their bail applications.

The court ordered that the matter be held in open court as it was held in private.

Wednesday’s surprising turn of events left people seated in the public gallery confused because the matter had previously been heard in an open court.

The five suspects face murder and attempted murder charges after they were arrested in connection with the killing of eight people during a birthday celebration in KwaZakhele on 29 January.

Two of the five men arrested in connection with the Kwazakhele birthday massacre abandoned their bail bids when they appeared in the magistrate’s court in Gqeberha on Monday, while the police confirmed another two arrests were imminent.
