KARACHI: An advisory committee on the review of the Sindh Environmental Protection Act 2014 will be notified as soon as the required nominations are received from the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).
This was said by environment, climate change and coastal development secretary Mohammad Aslam Ghauri while speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day symposium on integrated solid waste management.
The event was jointly organised by the KCCI, Society of Economic Geologists and Mineral Technologists (SEGMITE) and Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa).
“The department has sent a letter seeking nominations from KCCI for the advisory committee being set up for the consultation process to improve and make the environmental law more effective,” said Mr Ghauri.
SHC seeks reports on Keamari gas leakage

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday directed the environmental watchdog of the province and the Ministry of National Food Security & Researchâs Department of Plant Protection (DPP) to submit detailed reports on the alleged gas leak in Keamari that claimed the lives of 17 people and affected hundreds.
Hearing a petition seeking an inquiry into the Keamari incident, a division bench of the SHC headed by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar asked a provincial law officer who was responsible for the gas leakage and what were the reasons for the deaths in the incident.
Wahab wants tanneries to switch to solar power

KARACHI : Sindh Law and Environment Adviser Barrister Murtaza Wahab has suggested that the tanneries in Korangi Industrial Area should switch to the mode of solar power for operating their combined effluent treatment plant (CETP) to bring down the cost of treating the waste water of the industry.
He made this suggestion while taking part in a tree plantation tree drive on the green belt in Sector 7-A of Korangi Industrial Area. The office-bearers of the Pakistan Tanneries Association (PTA) were also present on the occasion.
Barrister Wahab said that using solar power to run the CETP would be helpful in bringing down the production cost of Pakistani leather products to increase their competitiveness in the international market.
