The owner of a Salt Spring Island house denies wrongdoing in a court case in which the province has used a new law to demand an explanation of the source of the $1 million used to buy the property.

The B.C. government has applied in court to order two B.C. residents to explain how they got $1 million to buy a home on Salt Spring Island.

The British Columbia government has filed the first-ever application to secure an unexplained wealth order in Canada, the provinces solicitor general said, calling the orders a “powerful tool” to clamp down on the proceeds of criminal activity.
