Ready for some fun? The Salt Lake Tribune recently published a readers quiz called "Think You Know Utah?" asking questions such as: "Why did Mark Hofmann ruin reporter Peggy Stacks first day at the Tribune?"; and "What does A.G. Sean Reyes do under his desk every morning?" Well, it got the staff here at Smart Bomb to thinking that maybe we, too, should have a quiz. Well call it, "Do You Get Zion?" 1. Blaine Lafreniere Outbreaks Create Isolation When living in Chicago years ago, I was involved on a philanthropic mission with the historical leper colony at Kalaupapa on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. What started out to be a single mission to support the final 90 leprosy patients in a community that for 150 years had been home to thousands of patients became a 15-year endeavor. The community is still occupied by a final few residents, even though now there is a cure for the disease and the ma...

click to enlarge There are many things special about being a native Utahn. We were not only born here, but we stay here despite all the reasons a good number of other Utahns give us to leave. The documentary focuses on Mark Hofmann who, in 1985, killed two people with bombs. Hofmann, who was a closeted Jack Mormon and a master forger, kept "finding" old documents that seemed to undermine the church, founded by Joseph Smi...

Director of Marketing and Community Relations Larissa Trout says, though, that the local non-profit quickly developed a beneficial system of response—one that hinges on simply showing up...

Ghost of the Weed Garden It seems these days that artists rarely choose a name that reflects the kind of music they make; too many ironic names abound. But the name Pitcher Plant—the title of the solo project by local Ysa Pitman—is perfect for this surrealist autoharpist. Her recent burst of three singles, released as Ghost of the Weed Garden, is a lovely little preview of what this artist has in store, hopefully by way of a full EP release later this year. Fans of Joanna Newsom or early S...

Mike Riedel I dare say that Belgian-style ales are the most difficult beers for people to get to know. Theres something primal yet refined in these beers that breaks all of the molds. Two local breweries have crafted two very different examples that show how interpretation and inspiration can go hand in hand. Level Crossing - Eternal Pursuit: This beer pays tribute to the Belgian strong styles, and featur...
